SCCL Press is the publishing arm of the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL), Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Through our publications, we aim to further the Centre's objectives of advancing research in Chinese language pedagogy and promoting the development of Chinese language, culture and literature in Singapore. Committed to a rigorous process of peer review, we aspire to make the SCCL Press imprint a hallmark of the finest academic publications.

Books published by SCCL Press consist of five main categories:

We welcome all well-prepared book proposals and on Chinese pedagogy, language and culture and seek submissions of collections of original and quality contributions. We also partner with government organizations and other publishing firm on a per-project basis.

Types of Publication

1. Journal (JCLE)
The Journal of Chinese Language Education (JCLE) is a fully-refereed biannual academic journal published by the Singapore Chinese Teachers' Union (SCTU) and the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language. JCLE focuses on theoretical and practical issues in teaching and learning Chinese as a second language. It also accepts papers on Chinese linguistics, literature, psychology, cognitive science and translation disciplines with pedagogical implications. JCLE seeks to promote theoretical and applied research on Chinese language education and disseminate effective practices in teaching and learning of Chinese.

JCLE was officially included in the list of journals under the prestigious Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) (Overseas) (2014-2015) in January 2014.

2. Academic Books and Monographs (Pedagogy)
Books under the Academic and Monographs (Pedagogy) category cater to practitioners and researchers in Chinese language education, covering issues concerning Chinese pedagogy, curriculum, language testing and assessment, ICT in education, research methodology as well as Chinese literature and its pedagogy. Quality books and monographs as well as collections of selected peer-reviewed papers originating from conferences organized by SCCL are also published under this category.

3. Reference Tools
Included in this category are dictionaries, indexes and concordances. So far, we have published two dictionaries and a Chinese sentence-type index. These dictionaries and index, which catalogued in details the frequency of occurrence and usage of Chinese characters, words and sentence types encountered by Singapore students, were compiled from the Singapore Students Daily Written Chinese Corpus developed by the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language.

4. Teaching Toolkits
Exemplary of the SCCL principle of "Research-Validate-Train", our teaching toolkits are collaborative works of SCCL researchers, Master Teachers (Chinese language) and frontline teachers. Each toolkit comes with a theoretical framework, lesson plans, PowerPoint slides, activity sheets, etc.

5. Readers and Story Books
To promote reading in young children, SCCL Press has published several series of graded readers and multimedia teaching series, namely, The Creative Lion Illustrated Graded Book Series, The New Stars Island Graded Picture Book Series, The Rainbow Bridge Interactive Graded Picture Books Series, The Flying Fish Graded Picture Books Series, The Little Caterpillar Pre-School Graded Picture Book Series and Chinese Idioms in Manga. The last title in particular is a popular multimedia teaching kit among local teachers.
